Customize Your Own Rolls-Royce Ghost II

Many automotive brands frequently revamp their vehicle designs and features, making new models sometimes barely recognizable from their predecessors, even if they share the same name. However, at the Goodwood facility, Rolls-Royce employs a different strategy. The term “facelift,” which other manufacturers might use to indicate a mid-cycle update, feels somewhat out of place for Rolls-Royce. Instead, we are introduced to the Ghost Series II, which was unveiled in 2020, where the visual differences from the original are intentionally minimal. It seems as if there’s a designer in the studio employed to ensure no one steps too far out of line.

The Ghost II arrives with a refined front end featuring updated headlights and redesigned daytime running lights. The Pantheon grille is illuminated more cleanly, yet retains the impressive, solid presence of previous iterations. New nine-spoke 22-inch wheels and a vertical light arrangement reminiscent of the Spectre with the “RR” monogram enhance the rear. These subtle modifications embody the brand’s vision of providing “an even greater canvas for creativity,” or in simpler terms, offering more opportunities for customization. A standout feature is the optional champagne cooler that caters to both non-vintage and vintage champagnes, with modes for optimal serving temperatures of 6°C and 11°C, respectively.

Inside, the revamped features first seen in the Cullinan have made their way into the Ghost, with the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine integrated into the clock cabinet on the dashboard. Rolls-Royce’s unique Duality Twill, crafted from bamboo, becomes an alternative to traditional leather, though classic choices like ostrich and alligator skins remain available. The central display showcases the Spirit operating system while incorporating Whisper, Rolls-Royce’s exclusive private members’ app that operates like a mobile concierge.

Additionally, the Ghost II features two “exciter” devices, benefiting audiophiles. These hidden components, located beneath the signature starlight headliner, enhance sound delivery within the cabin by transforming the ceiling into an expansive sound stage without traditional speaker cones. Backseat passengers now enjoy tech upgrades as well, with the ability to connect different streaming devices to their respective screens. Through the Rolls-Royce Bespoke department, Ghost purchasers typically spend about 10% of the purchase price on personalizing their vehicles. The department is poised for growth, having recently secured planning permission for expanded facilities at its West Sussex site to better focus on bespoke craftsmanship and innovations.

Powering the Ghost is the formidable 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine, with an available Black Badge variant offering an additional 29 horsepower compared to the standard model. While Rolls-Royce has yet to delve into hybrid technology, their entirely electric Spectre model is available for those seeking emissions-free driving. The V12 engine is reputed for its quietness and smoothness, akin to that of an electric motor. The refined ride experience continues with the advanced Planar Suspension System, which combines sophisticated engineering with simplicity to ensure a smooth journey. This system includes a cushioned mass for absorbing minor bumps and the Flagbearer System that uses cameras to adapt the suspension to upcoming road surfaces, while the Satellite Aided Transmission adjusts gear selection. Collectively, these features contribute to the signature “magic carpet” ride associated with all Rolls-Royce vehicles.

For those seeking further personalization, two additional options are available: the Black Badge variant, known for its darker, more contemporary aesthetics, or the Extended Wheelbase model, which provides an extra 170mm of rear legroom. After selecting either option, an extensive range of customization possibilities awaits to tailor the Ghost to individual preferences. The Rolls-Royce Ghost II embodies continuity with subtle evolution, reinforcing that some elements remain timeless.
